Source Point Press has announced the release of their brand new comic book series, “Jack of Spades”, to coincide with the Motor City Comic Con on May 17th. This new original comic book series follows Jack Spade as he battles “paranormals”, characters emerging with incredible powers and abilities, in a world on the verge of change.

The cover art for Dirigible Days: 998 will be drawn by two-time Eisner Award winning artist Rick Burchett, best known for his work with DC Comics, Marvel and Disney, including The Batman and Robin Adventures and the steampunk web comicLady Sabre and the Pirates of the Ineffable Aether.  Artist Chris Bailey, creator of the promotional art and introduction animation used in the Dirigible Days web series, will be illustrating the interior artwork.

“Taking the story from a web series to a comic is an exciting challenge,” says Gary Lobstein of Day 304. “I love movies and comics, so it will be a blast to make Dirigible Days in both mediums and show just how expansive this world is.”

Day 304 Productions is running a Kickstarter fundraiser from April 19 until May 31 to produce the comic book. The $7,800 goal is needed to pay for artwork and printing costs. If successful, Dirigible Days: 998 will be released Summer 2014 and will be available for purchase online and at local St. Louis comic book stores. The Expo is set to debut on Friday and Saturday, March 29 and 30, at the Granada Avenue Gymnasium, 30 E. Granada Avenue in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

The show will present the world of music, comics, movies, television, toys and more, with a showroom packed with over 100 exhibitor spaces.

Numerous vendors will be buying, selling and trading a variety of antique, vintage and popular culture collectibles, such as DVDs, posters, books, magazines, comics, trading cards, art, crafts, jewelry, apparel, toys, games, lunchboxes, advertising items, CDs, vinyl albums and singles, antique cash registers, jukeboxes, gumball machines, pinballs, and antique arcade games.

The event is being organized by USA Theatres, which operates a portable drive-in and outdoor movie theatre in Central Pennsylvania.

“All of the events that we organize exhibit the retro factor,” said Ronald M. Vastola, Outreach Coordinator for USA Theatres.

Special guests including Bronson Pinchot (best known as Balki Bartokomous on the ABC sitcom Perfect Strangers), Butch Patrick (best known as Eddie Munster on the 1960s hit television series The Munsters), and model Cassandra Lynn, will all be on hand signing autographs and meeting fans, in addition to several other special guests.

“Many actors and most movie stars — show audiences versions of themselves onscreen, which is cool if you can pull it off. Since I’ve been a character actor all my life, being merely myself seems like something of a giant leap, both to myself and the audience… And I love it,” Pinchot said.

Pinchot currently stars on The Bronson Pinchot Project, a home renovation show on the DIY Network. Each episode features Pinchot and his crew of local contractors renovating another room at one of his properties in Harford, Pennsylvania.

“There is also a fair amount of teaching I do on the show, but not in a forced way, more in a ‘spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down’ style… And since I’m doing it through my homeboy-carpenters, who are all rural Pennsylvania guys, it doesn’t seem preachy.”

Pinchot said he is looking forward to coming to Hershey and meeting fans.

“As always, I’ll happily do the Balki accent for anyone over 80, as long as I can whisper it to them,” he added.

Butch Patrick will also be on hand to meet and greet fans.

“The Munsters have a really good staying power, the family values hold up really well,” said Patrick. “Now you have kids watching it with their grandparents or parents, everybody enjoying it together, which is difficult because there is not a whole lot of shows that that happens to.”

Patrick said his experience on The Munsters was amazing. “It turned out to be an interesting show, it was very well received, it was fun, good music, good guest stars, cool cars, all of the above,” he added.

According to Patrick, he is currently working on a renovation show (much like The Bronson Pinchot Project), but with a twist. He said his grandmother’s house in Missouri is the showcase of his new project, where he is creating a haunted bed-and-breakfast.

“It is an old classic historical house, built in 1875, with the resident ghost,” Patrick said. “We are doing a restoration show/history show/bio show, ‘Hollywood boy comes back home,’ to a bed-and-breakfast.”

Other guests, who will be appearing at the expo, include Paris Themmen (best known as Mike Tee Vee in the classic film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory), Matt Hardy (professional wrestler), Geri Reischl (best known as Jan Brady from Sid & Marty Krofft’s Brady Bunch Variety Hour), David Orange (best known as the Sleepy Klingon from the motion picture Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country), and Triston Johnson (Zombie Barn Walker from AMC’s hit series The Walking Dead).

A live performance by award-wining Elvis Presley Impersonator Brad Crum will also be on hand.

Crum will be taking audiences through many of Presley’s legendary hits with the genuine sound, look and feel of the man himself.

Crum will be performing three sets on Saturday between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.

“I will be doing three costume changes and be featuring 60 songs that cover the entire range of Elvis’ career,” Crum said.

Crum’s impersonating is so compelling that he modeled for the Aloha Elvis figure released in 2008 by McFarlane Toys. The 6-inch figure features Crum’s body with Elvis’ face, he said.

According to USA Theatres, seating will be limited to one set per person and subject to availability on a first-come, first-served basis, space permitting.

Attendees will also have the opportunity for a chance to win a brand new classic-style full-size jukebox (List Price: $1,495.95), provided by RetroWonders.com, an authorized reseller of Crosley Radio products.

A real-Life 1966 Batmobile and Star Wars characters will also be featured, in addition to a pinball showcase and a mobile video game theater.

Early buyers are welcome Friday evening at 5 p.m. and also Saturday morning at 8 a.m. for $25 per person each day, while general admission on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is $7 for adults and $5 for seniors, college students and active military with photo I.D. First issue of new superhero series gets second printing
This week, Image Comics demonstrated what everyone has suspected all along: SEX sells. Joe Casey’s and Piotr Kowalski’s comic book SEX, that is — a subversive take on superheroes that takes a former costumed crime-fighter into the underbelly of the city he’d formerly sworn to protect. The first issue, which made its debut with a limited edition exclusive cover at Emerald City Comicon and landed in stores on March 6, has sold out and will receive a second printing.

In this new iteration, Dr. Mirage is the stage name of Shan Fong, a one-time television investigator of paranormal phenomena whose unique abilities make her an invaluable asset to police departments around the world. During the upcoming “Darque Reckoning” storyline – beginning on March 6th in Shadowman #5 – Fong steps into the world of Jack Boniface and the Shadowman after discovering that no matter where she goes, the dead only have one thing to say: “Master Darque is coming.”

The story itself centers around the main character, Cherri Creeper, once known by the Mortal name, Charlotte Webb. After being bitten and left for dead by a rouge vampire, Charlotte is lead by a love smitten bat named Bing into an alternate realm where the Shadow Academy resides.

The Shadow Academy is an institution were fledgling Vampires learn to drink responsibly. There, Charlotte is given her her new Vampire name, meets her classmates, teachers and begins her Vampiric education.

Unlike many Adventure or Vampire series or movies, School Bites does not dip into the ‘we must Save or Destroy the world!’ dramatics. It relies on personal experiences of the characters dealing with being different, coping with coming of age, being ageless, friendship and matters of the heart.

These Vampires do no live on blood alone. Because of a special elixir, they can live on sugary goodies for most of the time, giving them the ability to pick and choose their human meals more carefully without bloodlust clouding their decision.

Up and coming artist/writer Zach Bassett has been working tirelessly to fulfill his
childhood dream of creating comic books. He has done work for various

Zach Bassett’s Yurushi tells the story of a young Samurai who was blinded as a
child while trying the save the life of his father. Haunted by his failure and a thirst
for vengeance – he roams the land without cause or purpose until one day he
accidently slays a woman in the woods mistaking her for his father’s assassin.
His honor dictates that he must atone for this mistake until he meets and falls in
love with the daughter of the slain woman. Consumed by shame, the Samurai is
forced to come to terms with his actions and must decide if the truth is more
important than his own happiness.

And then, in the face of all that despair and gloom, somehow there is still hope. That’s East of West.”

The Four Horseman aren’t exactly Biblical — Hickman describes them as “scary adolescents,” and their goal is to take a series of actions that will eventually domino into apocalypse. In the face of this, the question of who will stand against them is one of the many mysteries and shocking revelations of EAST OF WEST.

Hickman’s collaborator, artist Dragotta, whom Hickman calls “Probably the most expressive artist I’ve had the pleasure of working with,” has also worked with him on Marvel’s Fantastic Four and FF. His intricate pages capture dusty wastelands and cramped cityscapes, as well as the varied inhabitants of EAST OF WEST’s apocalyptic world.

Each issue of the NFL RUSH ZONE comic book series features Ishmael “Ish” Taylor, an eleven-year old boy who serves as the primary protagonist, as well as other NFL Guardians. Guardians are the chosen young protectors of the players and their teams. Issues will feature current NFL players and one or more NFL Rusher, who assists the Guardians in protecting the NFL and the world from would-be conquerors. Each of the 32 NFL teams has Rusherz, and over time every team will have stories directly related to their games.

Action Lab and the NFL have plans to distribute the comic book series and trade paperbacks to retail outlets, booksellers and the NFL RUSH ZONE website, as well as making it available at NFLShop and in team shops at NFL stadiums. This April, Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel usher in a new age for Mutantkind in X-Men #1!

SEX, a new Image Comics series, takes a drastic turn from writer Joe Casey’s previous work, like BUTCHER BAKER THE RIGHTEOUS MAKER and GØDLAND. In an interview at Comic Book Resources’ Robot6, Casey described SEX as a comic that is “experimental in a different way … just not in an obvious way.”

Simon, formerly known as the Saint, Saturn City’s greatest hero, discovers what it is like to live not as an icon, but as person. After years of keeping himself at a distance from society, Simon finds himself ill-equipped for the tasks of a “normal” life, like running a business and navigating relationships – including with women, whom he’d stayed away from in his decade as a costumed vigilante.

And it’s not just Simon who has to adjust to the new normalcy. His former enemies, now without a nemesis, have to re-adjust and re-evaluate their lives.

With moody, shadowy art by Polish artist Piotr Kowalksi (Malignant Man), SEX takes readers into the dark underbelly of a city without a hero. In choosing Kowalski to depict this world, Casey had specific criteria that he felt Kowalski fulfilled.

“I wanted to work with Piotr because everything about his art, his storytelling, his approach to comics is infused with a cool, European vibe… because he lives and works there,” Casey related. “That vibe fits with how we want to present this story. He doesn’t shy away from the sexual content contained in the book, but gives it to you in a very non-gratuitous manner.”

Interviews with Casey about SEX have appeared on Comics Alliance and Comic Book Resources’ Robot6, and another will be published at USA Today. SEX is a new on-going, full-color comic book series for mature readers. The first issue will be in stores and available digitally on March 6.

The story of Fabian Gray, a treasure hunter (some say thief) possessed by five ghosts, each an archetypical literary character, who imbue him with their unique talents and skills. The Wizard gives Gray the ability to wield magic. The Archer gives him lightning-quick reflexes and deadly accuracy. The Detective lends powers of intuition and deduction. From The Samurai, Gray borrows discipline and self-mastery – as well as mastery of a razor-sharp katana. The Vampire’s subtlety, allure, and deadliness are the most dangerous powers of all for Gray to wield – both to his enemies and himself.

Gray will need the powers of all his ghosts to save the woman who was lost in the same incident that resulted in his possession – his twin sister Silvia, whose absence haunts him even more than the five spirits. But he’s finding it harder to control them, so he must hurry – before Fabian Gray is subsumed by the personalities of the FIVE GHOSTS.

“Five Ghosts is the culmination of a lot of different ideas and influences that have been storming around in my head since I started creating comics,” said writer Barbiere. “I’m excited to be working with Image and can’t wait for readers to see what we have in store for them.”

Artist Mooneyham renders Fabian Gray’s adventures in deep shadows and intense, panel-packed pages, interspersed with splash pages that perfectly pace the narrative. His art has a definite classic horror comic influence apparent but a style all its own.

“I’m a big fan of comics from the 60s, 70s, and 80′s, not to mention pulp adventures from the 30s-50s,” said Mooneyham. “My mission with Five Ghosts is to bring back that sense of fun and adventure that I feel is missing in today’s comics. I’m very excited to have found a home for it at Image Comics.”

Following the recent announcement that Titan Comics is offering new original creator-owned series in 2013, Titan Comics is pleased to announce a new co-publishing venture with A1 publisher, Dave Elliott.

Dave Elliott has more than 25 years of experience working in the comic book industry. He created Sharky and Maximum Force and has worked on diverse titles such as Deadline, 2000 AD, Justice League of America, Transformers and GI Joe. In 2006, he co-founded Radical Studios and played an integral role in the development and launch of Radical’s premiere comic book titles, several of which have now begun development as film properties – including Hercules, Shrapnel, Caliber, Hotwire, The Last Days of American Crime and Oblivion, which is due to hit cinemas next May, and stars Tom Cruise and Morgan Freeman.

The new publishing venture between Titan Comics and Dave Elliott launches in June 2013 and will see the release of brand-new comics and stunning new and classic graphic novels.

The first wave hits from June 2013 with two new series: A1, a monthly revival of the famously experimental anthology and the new music-festival adventure, Tomorrowland.

The first collections will drop in September 2013, with releases including the League of Extraordinary Gentleman-style Weirding Willows, supernatural anthology Monster Massacre and the adventures of the teenage god Sharky. The first volume of the new A1 annual and the collection of Tomorrowland will release later in the year.

“Anyone who has been in the comics industry knows Dave Elliott, and his industrious and creative talent,” says Nick Landau, Publisher of Titan Comics. “He has an address book like no-one in the business, a never-ending fount of ideas, and the savvy to win the best global creators over to his team. About Dave Elliott

DAVE Elliott has more than 25 years of experience working in every aspect of the comic book industry from writer and artist to editor and publisher. Dave created Sharky and Maximum Force and has worked on diverse titles such as A1, Deadline, Viz Comic, Heavy Metal magazine, Penthouse Comix, 2000 AD, Justice League of America, Transformers, GI Joe and Doctor Who. He recently worked with the band Fall Out Boy, and with NASCAR/MMI to create and brand new intellectual properties which he sites as examples of new media integration for a more immersive entertainment experience.

In 2006, Dave co-founded Radical Studios. We all know mainstream superhero comics have very little space for new names; but the indie comics market isn’t crazy about non-satiric superhero stories either. This means even getting Hyper Heroes to where it is now has been a challenge from day one. However, this hasn’t stopped them from getting there… and they’re still going at it.

Like the other members of The Atomics, Mr. Gum is a former beatnik who developed superpowers after being exposed to alien spore — in his case, the power of elasticity. He and the other Atomics are on a galactic concert tour, and IT GIRL AND THE ATOMICS #6 is a not-so-typical day off. To impress a girl, Mr. Gum decides to prove his rock-star status, and ends up tangling with more trouble than he bargained for. And possibly a giant space monster.

“Mr. Gum was probably the character I was most sad not having as a regular in It Girl and the Atomics,” said writer, Rich. “He’s your typical fast-talking, wise-cracking rubber man, and I’ve always thought he was a blast. I wrote a four-page bit with him in Liberty Comics a couple of years ago, and it was like unleashing my Id. A chance to write visual and verbal jokes!”

Clugston-Flores’s art is known for its manga-influenced style, high energy, and mod sensibilities, the perfect combination for the space adventures of an ex-Beatnik. She also has experience, being the first artist besides Michael Allred to draw It Girl, in a one-shot published by Oni Press when Rich was editor there.

“When I was casting about for someone to have pop in for fill-in issues, Chynna was just a natural choice,” said Rich. “Particularly for Mr. Gum. The three of us have a shared sense of humor: me, Chynna, and Gum.”

“I was very excited to get a chance to draw an entire comic dedicated to Mr. Gum, a personal favorite, and be involved with It Girl again, as well as collaborate with Jamie after so long! Jamie’s right about our sense of humor, and Mr. Gum certainly personifies it when he’s at his worst (or rather, most amusing, in my opinion!),” added Clugston Flores. “Not to mention being given the chance to draw aliens, monsters, and insert some of my own ’80s pop culture references at random in the art without anyone seeming to mind.”

Our flagship superhero title is penciled in as a bimonthly, which means we have six issues on the drawing boards for 2013. And, as a bonus, we’re looking to add a Champions Annual this summer.

Two of her classic artists, Mark Propst and Gordon Purcell, are already working on new story material. But this is still very tentative. We just don’t want to commit to that bimonthly schedule until we know for certain that we’ll be able to sustain it. In any event, in the latter half of the year, look for these issues, and possibly a new Flare Annual.

INFINITES

MURCIELAGA SHE-BAT

SENSATIONAL G-GIRL

The G-Girl’s solo title is probably the iffiest book on our schedule. Because we love America’s newest superhero sweetheart, Billi Jayne Jensen, and didn’t want you to have to wait any longer to meet her, we are featuring several sensational G-Girl adventures in the pages of Champions. But the big one on the drawing boards is Sensational G-Girl #1, which we’ll get to you as soon as Mark Beachum has it ready. But don’t plan on seeing it until possibly as late as October.

WITCHGIRLS INC

Also in a holding pattern is the long-awaited “Return of Lady Arcane” story arc. The way things stand now, we’re not going to be able to launch that eight-part adventure until early 2014. But we are going to try to get two issues of WitchGirls Inc into print during 2013.

WitchGirls Inc #11 is scheduled for July.

WitchGirls Inc #12 is scheduled for October.

ADVENTURES OF CHRISSIE CLAUS

And yes, come November, in the pages of Adventures of Chrissie Claus #6, the secret origin of Santa’s li’l elfin granddaughter will at last be revealed.

TRADE PAPERBACKS

Three new collections of classic adventures from Heroic Publishing are on the schedule, with more to follow later in the year.

Flare: Dark Justice will be available in January, featuring her adventures from FLARE #28-35.

Lady Arcane: The Magic Is Alive is scheduled for March, featuring our mistress of magic’s earliest solo adventures.

Eternity Smith: Book 1 is scheduled for May, featuring the original six-issue Eternity Smith story arc.

Image Comics also recently revealed a T-shirt bearing the series’ tagline “Science is the new rock ‘n’ roll,” to be released in March.

The holidays have come early, thanks to free digital #1s of two critically acclaimed Image Comics miniseries. The debut issues of two Image Comics science fiction miniseries, STORM DOGS and COMEBACK, are now free at comiXology and on the Image Comics digital site and app. The two issues have sold out in print at the distributor level.

“The free digital firsts are a great way for people who may have missed the print issues to get started reading a new series,” said Image Comics PR and Marketing Director, Jennifer de Guzman. “Storm Dogs and Comeback have excellent receptions and reviews, and we don’t want people to have to delay reading them. New fans can either follow up at their local comics shop or continue buying the series digitally — whichever they prefer.”

“I fell in love with comics at an early age, and recall wanting to be a comic artist as one of my first childhood dreams”, said Gagné. “I later became interested in animation and special effects and pursued a career in that field. Despite this new passion, I never wavered in my love of comics and ultimately couldn’t shake the festering desire to create my own series. In early 2001, after finishing up a demanding job as Head of Special Effects at Warner Brothers Feature Animation, I took time off to make that dream come true. This is how ZED was born.”

The first issue of ZED was self-published in July 2001 and the series concluded with issue 10, published in January 2012. Unfolding over the issues is the story of a cute young alien whose invention makes him the target of a galactic villain. Doing a comic series after hours, single-handedly, proved to be a more difficult task than Gagné first anticipated. “I planned to tell my tale over a period of ten issues and felt pretty confident, at the time, that I could have the whole thing wrapped up and published within a couple of years,” said Gagné. “Little did I know that it would take me eleven years to finally bring the series to fruition. ZED is, first and foremost, a labor of love which I created at my own pace. The comic series became a way for me to build my graphic novel.”

ZED reflects Gagné’s deep love for golden age science fiction and oddball cartooning. It is influenced by his favorite books and movies, as well as political news, rock concerts and things he has experienced and witnessed throughout his life. With the series wrapped up, Gagné combined all ten issues into a single graphic novel that reads as one uninterrupted story. Because of the time span it took to get the series done, Gagné felt that the writing and art style needed a second pass to make them more consistent.

“The disparity from one issue to the next was less visible when separated into individual comic books, but all strung together in graphic novel form, the inconsistencies became painfully obvious”, said Gagné. “When putting the final book together, I didn’t treat it as a straight reprint book. I spend several months reworking the art and writing to make it more cohesive. I consider ZED: A Cosmic Tale published by Image Comics to be the definitive version of the story.”

In 2007, he was the author Guest of Honor at the World Science Fiction Convention, the first to be held in Asia. Komatsu passed away in July 2011.
