AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE - Archie Comics New Series

New York, NY – Archie Comics, the leading mass market comic book publisher in the world and home to some of the most recognizable pop culture characters, is proud to announce a brand new ongoing series being added to Archie’s line-up entitled: AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE.

What if the zombie apocalypse began in Riverdale? This horror-infused comic answers that question when it kicks off in late 2013, spearheaded by one of Hollywood’s hottest writers, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who will be fresh off the high profile crossover, ARCHIE MEETS GLEE.

AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE will provide readers with zombie-filled mayhem like only Archie can, taking the Riverdale gang where they’ve never been before – to the grave and back.

In addition to his Archie credits, Aguirre-Sacasa has made a name for himself in the world of television (writer/producer on GLEE), Broadway musicals (Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark), and movies, penning the remake of Stephen King’s Carrie, which premieres this fall.

“Roberto’s a superstar writer,” said Archie Co-CEO Jon Goldwater. “Working with him on the upcoming AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE is the next step in the ever expanding Archie universe.”

“AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE combines two of my great passions: Archie comics and horror comics,” said Aguirre-Sacasa. “This series came out of conversations with Jon [Goldwater], asking questions like, ‘what if the Archie characters found themselves in a Stephen King novel like The Stand or a Sam Raimi movie like The Evil Dead?’ Could we pull that off, tonally? We’re really going for it. The first arc is called ‘Escape from Riverdale.’ The second arc is called, brace yourself, ‘Betty RIP.’ Of course, all the horror stuff will be balanced by elements that are quintessentially Archie.”

The GLAAD Media Awards nominations were announced Wednesday and Archie Comics is proud to count Kevin Keller amongst its nominees. This is the third nomination for the Kevin title in this category since the character’s debut in 2010, earning a nod each year it was eligible.

“We are so thrilled for Kevin to be honored this way,” said Archie Comics Co-CEO Jon Goldwater. “Archie’s pal Kevin has been a perfect addition to the gang. It’s hard to imagine Riverdale without him.”

“Archie Comics continues to be ahead of the curve, paving the way for characters like Kevin to be represented in mainstream comics,” said Archie Comics President Mike Pellerito. “Riverdale is, and will always be, a place that embraces diversity.”

2012 was a landmark year for Kevin, which saw the character transition from a mini-series into the launch of an ongoing title as well as his highly publicized wedding in the pages of Life with Archie. The critically praised comic capped the year with a guest appearance from the legendary Star Trek actor George Takei whom Kevin idolizes.

“I applaud a forward thinking comic like Kevin Keller and am flattered to be a part of it,” said George Takei of his guest spot. “Comics play an important role in contributing to a healthy, sociable community and Kevin is a great role model for the youth of America. I am delighted to see GLAAD recognize it.”

Kevin continues to make appearances in high profile Archie projects including last year’s Archie Meets KISS and the upcoming Archie Meets GLEE crossover. This spring Kevin will also make the leap into books with a young adult novel published by Penguin Young Readers Group.

Created by Dan Parent, Kevin Keller first appeared in Veronica #202, the first comic to go to a second printing in Archie Comics history. Parent continues to write and draw the adventures of Kevin Keller into 2013.

ARCHIE COMICS ANNOUNCES FREE COMIC BOOK DAY TITLES

Archie Comics is proud to present its extremely popular World of Archie Digest for Free Comic Book Day. This year marks the return of an Archie-centric title to the FCBD lineup and to celebrate, World of Archie Digest was submitted as a Gold Title.

“Archie Comics is offering the most content of any publisher on Free Comic Book Day this year with the World of Archie Digest, the perfect introduction to Archie Comics,” said Archie Comics President Mike Pellerito. “Archie Comics has been the entry point to comics for kids decade after decade and this will help the direct market grow with Archie.”

Packed with stories by some of the most-loved creators in the business, the World of Archie Digest offers 96 full-color pages, which guarantees you won’t find a FCBD title that comes anywhere close to this many free pages.

Additionally, this year Archie Comics is including not one, but two stories from their action line. Just in time for the start of the landmark Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man crossover event, comes the Silver Title flipbook featuring both video game icons, exclusively for Free Comic Book Day.

Says Pellerito, “Archie Comics, king of crossovers that brought you Archie Meets KISS and the upcoming Archie Meets GLEE, brings fans the ultimate video game comic crossover of all time – Sonic/Mega Man: Worlds Collide. This FCBD flipbook serves as a primer for the crossover event of 2013.”

The 12-part storyline will run through the ongoing Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man and Sonic Universe titles and marks Sonic’s 20th comic book anniversary. The blue mascots deftly blend action/adventure with a dash of humor in their titles, offering fans everything they could want in a comic. The 32-page full-color flipbook will feature artists from both Sonic and Mega Man comic book fame, with covers by Ben Bates and written by fan favorite Ian Flynn.
