Publisher’s Blurb:
A new series featuring the Court of Owls’ unstoppable killing machine! • Meet Calvin Rose, the only Talon ever to escape the grasp of the Court of Owls. This former assassin just wants to live a normal life…but that’s impossible, since he’s being hunted by his former masters!
Reviewer’s Comments:
Calvin Rose never wanted to be on the run. He never wanted to be an escape artist. All he ever probably wanted was to have a family and a normal life but fate didn’t exactly have that in store for him when he began his life chained to an old dog kennel by his father. Things didn’t improve much after that point.
Escaping from that point, he began a life on the road eventually crossing paths with Haley’s Circus, and joining them to be trained as an escape artist. He impressed some mysterious folks, and came to their attention; they being the Court of Owls, much to old Mr. Haly’s disappointment. He then began working for them committed to their goal of ridding the world of evil people but he would not know what their definition truly was until he would be faced with the ultimate task: killing a little girl and subsequently her older sister (or mother). He chose not to do that, and for that reason, became the target of the Court. Now, he’s on the run, and can never look back….
Scott Snyder and James Tynion IV hit another homerun with this character and his story. It’s quite difficult to not have the character be overshadowed by the past events of the Bat-books but the writer make sure it is his story; not the Court’s. Guillem March does a fine job as usual with the art bringing his unique sensibilities to the character. March’s detail to everything makes this book an extra bit more vivid than it normally would be.
The final product is a wide open road for the character.
