Okay, so, I have to be totally upfront; I decided to read and review this book solely based on the title: The Ninjettes. Seriously, how could one go wrong with a series that’s got ‘ninja’ as a root word in the title? Besides the title, the fact that this series is a spinoff from Garth Ennis’s Jennifer Blood more than assures me that this comic will be a bloody good time… and a bloody gore-fest it is. There is carnage galore packed in this issue as no man, woman or pet is safe from the femme fatales.

Although The Ninjettes succeed in the loss of limbs department, there is a steep learning curve for a new reader is a bit oft-putting. Jumping into this series at issue #5, there are quite a few questions that need to be answered, like, for instance, who exactly are the Ninjettes, besides three young women in skin tight barely there outfits, armed to the gills with guns and swords, and why should I care about the bit players from another more popular series?

I hate to say it but after 22 pages I had few answers to those questions and no emotional attachment to the characters of Kelly, Chelsea and/or Skyler. With no prior knowledge of the Jennifer Blood universe, and a possible satirical undertone that maybe at work, I don’t want to be overly critical but I felt like I wasn’t in on the joke. In fact, at times felt as if I were reading a cliched, blaxploitation “samurai Sunday” style comic as many of the characters resemble those troupes.

The Ninjettes has quite a few things working both for, and against it, but hopefully as the story continues to move through the origin of Kelly, Chelsea and Skyler there will be more characterization and reason to care about them, because honestly, who doesn’t like ninjas?
