Rating: 3/5 Publisher Name: Dynamite Entertainment Publisher Website: www.dynamite.net Writer: Al Ewing Artist: Eman Casallos Colorist: Inlight Studio Number of Pages: 22 Price: 3.99 Safety Content Label: Mature “Everything We Like Is Hard” Publisher Blurb: It all comes together as Kelly, Skyler and Chelsea finally become the Ninjettes… and select their first kill! Guest-starring: Blood! Not Jennifer Blood, just gallon after stickily coagulating gallon of people’s blood, all over the walls and the floor and the cat and even in your hair! SO MUCH BLOOD. YOU’LL NEVER BE CLEAN. Reviewers Comments: Okay, so, I have to be totally upfront; I decided to read and review this book solely based on the title: The Ninjettes. Seriously, how could one go wrong with a series that’s got ‘ninja’ as a root word in the title? Besides the title, the fact that this series is a spinoff from Garth Ennis’s Jennifer Blood more than assures me that this comic will be a bloody good time… and a bloody gore-fest it is. There is carnage galore packed in this issue as no man, woman or pet is safe from the femme fatales. Although The Ninjettes succeed in the loss of limbs department, there is a steep learning curve for a new reader is a bit oft-putting. Jumping into this series at issue #5, there are quite a few questions that need to be answered, like, for instance, who exactly are the Ninjettes, besides three young women in skin tight barely there outfits, armed to the gills with guns and swords, and why should I care about the bit players from another more popular series? I hate to say it but after 22 pages I had few answers to those questions and no emotional attachment to the characters of Kelly, Chelsea and/or Skyler. With no prior knowledge of the Jennifer Blood universe, and a possible satirical undertone that maybe at work, I don’t want to be overly critical but I felt like I wasn’t in on the joke. In fact, at times felt as if I were reading a cliched, blaxploitation “samurai Sunday” style comic as many of the characters resemble those troupes. The Ninjettes has quite a few things working both for, and against it, but hopefully as the story continues to move through the origin of Kelly, Chelsea and Skyler there will be more characterization and reason to care about them, because honestly, who doesn’t like ninjas?

Classic Comic Review #10: Spider-Man, Storm and Power Man…Battle Smokescreen!Written by TaliAdina on Jul 4, 2012Filed in: Comicmaniacs | No Comments » In honor of The Amazing Spider-Man Film arriving in theaters and the many fans who will sit down and watch it this Fourth of July weekend, the Classic Comic Review presents: Spider-Man, Storm and Power Man…Battle Smokescreen! 1982 Publisher: Marvel Comics Group No one knows who the creative team was. There’s no listing for a writer, penciller, inker, etc. So it’s all a mystery. The story is basically a PSA (Public Service Announcement) alerting comic book readers about the dangers of smoking. It features Power Man aka Luke Cage whose coaching a track team in the inner city. The star of the team Bret keeps performing worse and worse and it’s revealed that he’s been smoking. Power Man follows the teen to a club where he discovers this as well as our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. The two heroes enlist the help of the X-man Storm.
For its time, it was a good PSA. The art is nice and the story though a little cheesy, is a good one. It was nice to read and it was awesome to see Spider-Man, Power Man, and Storm. |
