WANT TO PROMOTE YOUR PROJECT? We can help.

As co-owner of Fanboy Buzz I often find myself talking to indie creators who find themselves telling me about how difficult it is to get their project any attention. What you may not know is that when I encounter these folks, I direct them to Fanboy Buzz.

New readers of Fanboy Buzz may not be aware, but in 2005 when Scott and I created the site, we always had the desire to cover a balanced mix of comic book content. We set out to include a range varying from Marvel and DC to the creator working out of their basement to put out a comic using an on-demand print service.

With the indie comic book industry beginning to make a recovery from the economic downturn, we’re seeing an increase in indie creators returning to the comic book scene. We wanted to take a few minutes to make sure creators of all levels knew that we are still (and always have) encouraging them to submit their work to Fanboy Buzz for consideration.

If you are sending out a press release for your project, we encourage you to submit to news@fanboybuzz.com. Further, if you want a member of our review staff to review the work – please submit it for consideration to reviews@fanboybuzz.com.

We wish you the best of luck with your project and we hope to hear from you soon.

Project: Rooftop Announces

“Fantastic Four: Fashion Forward” Redesign Contest Long-time Marvel artist Stuart Immonen To Act As Guest Judge

They’re the first family of comic superheroes, and the first truly nuclear family in history; they’re the Fantastic Four. Created by Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, the F.F. rang in their fiftieth year last year with Reed finally growing into that greying hair he’s always had. In modern comics, the team (and the title) are have been floating in one of the most critically acclaimed runs since the original days of Stan and Jack, and to celebrate the team and their tenure Project: Rooftop is taking them in in our next redesign contest. “Fantastic Four: Fashion Forward” is a Project: Rooftop contest giving artists worldwide the chance to redesign this super-hero family in a friendly competition for honor, recognition and just plain fun.

“The Fantastic Four have been high on our list of heroes to celebrate here at Project: Rooftop for years,” says site co-founder and comics journalist Chris Arrant. “Now seems like the perfect time to honor these four timeless creations and the two men who created them 51 years ago.”

For this ambitious contest (Project: Rooftop’s first team contest), P:R’s staff will be joined by a very special guest to judge the entries: Stuart Immonen, artist of Fear Itself, New Avengers, Nextwave and creator-owned projects such as Moving Pictures, Shockrockets and Superstar: As Seen On TV. For the Richards & Co., Immonen has illustrated them in runs on both Fantastic Four and Ultimate Fantastic Four. Project: Rooftop has long admired his work and featured critiques of his superhero design on multiple occasions, and Project: Rooftop was in fact launched back on March 14, 2006 with a original redesign of Marvel’s Black Widow Immonen contributed.

Entries for “Fantastic Four: Fashion Forward” should redesign the original four members of the Fantastic Four: Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Girl, the Thing and the Human Torch. Any entries including other characters or missing these four will be discarded. All entries must be received by July 31, 2012 at midnight EST. As usual, check our guidelines, include your name and website, and send your art as an attachment in jpg, png, or gif format to projectrooftop@gmail.com.

Thanks to Daniel Irizarri for designing our contest logo!

Comicmaniac Spotlight: Aggressive Comix’s Jenny Lorenzo

Written by on Jun 25, 2012
Filed in: Comicmaniacs  |  3 Comments »

Jenny Lorenzo is the awesome host of Aggressive Comix Presents Geekgasm. Geekgasm this neat unique show that speaks about all things geeky with a mixture of humor that only Jenny and the show’s creators can give. I had the opportunity to talk to her via email about her cool gig, her other projects that she’s working on as well as what fans can look forward to from the show as well as from Aggressive Comix.

How did you get into comics and geek stuff?

Jenny: I started as a computer geek and flourished into a geek of gaming and movies. I wouldn’t rest until I could figure out iframes on a Geocities website whilst watching episodes of Star Trek the Next Generation on my small TV set. God, this makes me sound old. But that’s what I spent my time doing at 3am during my middle school summers. My days? I’d spend my days trying to demolish King Koopa (my hand sores weren’t pretty).

I wasn’t raised around comics but I was introduced to them in high school when I found the greatest bunch of friends (Emanuel and Rick being two of them) at my first job at Toys R Us. These folks helped me level up from geek to mega geek. And through them, I found my love for cosplay as well. We’re all going to SDCC for our second year in a row together so look out for our Adventure Time group cosplay!

Can you give readers a little background about Aggressive Comix?

Jenny: “Created in 1997 by two six grade fan boys…who are now…adults.” This is probably the best and clearest description for Aggressive. We aren’t this mega corporation. We’re a regular group of geeks who want to share our interests and thoughts with the geek masses.

How did you involved with Aggressive Comix and become the host of Geekgasm?

Jenny: Picture it. San Diego Comic Con. 2011. I’m prancing around dressed like Ramona Flowers, a young fellow by the name of Rich Cassidy takes a photo of me, hands me a business card and BAM! Fate, people. Fate. (You like my Sophia Petrillo reference there?) Anyway, so yeah, Rich is one of the creators of AC and he was holding a cosplay contest on AC’s Facebook page. Of course, being the crazy cosplayer that I am, I vigorously searched the interwebs for pictures of my costumes. Well, lo and behold, I found the picture Rich took of me on AC’s page, we got to chattin’ and suddenly, out of nowhere, I’m the host of Geekgasm. Neat, ey?

What advice can you give fans who are interested in acting?

Jenny: I am going to say this. IT’S TOUGH AS SHITE. But don’t let that stop you! And the more skills you know, the better suited you’ll be. Write! Direct! Edit something! You’ll not only network with filmmakers but you’ll appreciate the craft of filmmaking more. And, I’m telling you; they’ll love you for that. Nobody wants a bratty actor on set.

What inspires you to act and write?

Jenny: A lot of things inspire me, man. Firstly, my family. They busted their butts to get give me an excellent education. Never missed a school play. Never rolled their eyes at me when I annoyed them to death with impromptu shows in my grandparents’ living room. Till this day, my mom lets me turn the house upside down for film projects. I see a lot of artists struggle to impress their family. I’m lucky I don’t have to. Secondly, my friends. They’re one inspiring bunch. We all have our big dreams and we’re always helping each other attain them. A slap on the face if necessary. Thirdly, it’s the desire to create. The desire to inspire and bring people the joy of laughter and entertainment. Lucille Ball has to be my biggest inspiration. Not only because of her talent, but the struggles she faced while still managing to make the world laugh. Now that’s something.

You wear a lot of different hats-you’re an actress, director, screenwriter, film editor, and graphic designer. Which one is your favorite?

Jenny: My favorite would have to be the actor hat. Always. It’s what I wanted to be since I was a kid. But I’m not just gonna sit around and wait for a Hollywood exec. to find me in line at a Walgreens and say “You! You’re gold, kid!” I’m making my own dang path by wearing all those other hats.

How much of Geekgasm is scripted and how much is ad-lib?

Jenny: I would say it is usually 85% scripted and 15% ad-lib. It depends on my mood and how passionate I am about the topic. Like..ehem..the Michael Bay episode(s).

I love the room where you film Geekgasm, it’s so cool! Who designed it?

Jenny: Thank you! The Geekgasm set is actually a wall in my small bedroom. There used to be this huge drawer set that hit the ceiling there so I had to get rid of it. Think Geek donated the Super Mario decals and the rest of the set is made up of Geektastic goods I’ve collected over time. Oh, yeah, ‘twas I who designed it. Heh.

What can fans look forward to from Geekgasm and Aggressive Comix?

Jenny: They can definitely look forward to lots of exciting projects underway. We’re always trying to think of new and clever ways of presenting an episode (which you’ll definitely see with our upcoming San Diego Comic Con episode). Ideally, we’d like to dish something out every week. But Geekgasm is a baby. Not even a year old. So I have a lot of faith that it will continue to grow. (That’s what she said)

Aside from Geekgasm, we have the hilarious Dead Pixel strips that are drawn and written by two of my bestest friends, Emanuel Sotomayor and Ricardo Prieto. We are also the publishing house for Ancient Dreams by J.P. Roth. It is an epic tale of blood lust, torment, passion, sacrifice and a love capable of destroying not only the gods themselves, but even the laws of space and time.

We’re always open to new talent to join our awesome fam! Sky’s the limit, dude.

How soon will Aggressive Comix have a website up?

Jenny: We actually have a website now! Wee! http://www.aggressivecomix.com

There are those out there-guys and girls alike who think that girls aren’t into comics and other geeky things. How do you feel about that?

Jenny: I think that has to be one of the most ignorant statements in the history of ever. Conventions are swarming with them. I see them all the time at comic book/hobby shops. (I sound like I’m speaking of a rare insect species). And I’m talking about Miami here. MIAMI. It’s tough to find geek folk around here. But even so…they exist. But because the whole geek thing has turned into this “fad”, it’s hard to tell the good geek from the bad geek. Especially when one is a female. Occasionally, I will see someone make a statement about how I’m a “fake geek”. Yet, I was picked on for years as a kid because I was a geek. And now the new insult is that I’m a fake? That ironic statement gives me quite the giggle boner.

You’re gonna be a Comic-Con this year, will you have a booth and panel?

Jenny: Unfortunately, we won’t. That’s definitely something to aim for in the future. Eff that. IT’S GOING TO HAPPEN!

What summer film(s) are you most looking forward to?

Jenny: Avengers was #1 on my list and that shit was nuts. I left the theater high fiving old people and doing back flips. I’m now looking forward to The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spiderman. Aside from the hero flicks, I’m looking forward to Pixar’s Brave and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. I thoroughly enjoyed Prometheus and Ted. But Battleship was laugh-worthy. And they didn’t even say the line, damnit!
