Publisher’s Blurb:
The pairing you never thought could happen! IDW Publishing and DC Comics are proud to present the greatest tale of the 23rd century! Or is that the 31st century? As you’ll see here, it’s both. Eisner-nominated writer Chris Roberson and Star Trek and Legionnaires veteran artist Jeffrey Moy partner up to bring you the most bizarre partnership of any century! In this first issue, a group of Legionnaires end up lost in the 23rd century, but it’s a universe that isn’t familiar to either the Legion or the crew of the USS Enterprise!

Reviewer’s Comments:
Listeners of our podcast will know that in recent months I’ve started a segment on the show dedicated to reading Star Trek related comics. While so far I’ve mainly been reading IDW’s Star Trek Ongoing series, co-host of the podcast Jason Dyer recently suggested I check out the Star Trek Legion of Superheroes series. The series combines the TOS Star Trek crew with, well, the obvious – Legion of Superheroes.

I often find that Issue 1 of comic book series spend far too much time trying to develop character backstory rather than letting them come out with time. Luckily, Star Trek Legion of Superheroes does not fall into this flaw. The writing is smooth managing to convey not only the distinct Star Trek feel but also the classic comic book feel as well. The feel also comes can be accredited partially to the artwork where often there are subtle expressions on character faces which helps to take readers back to the vibe felt on the original Star Trek series.

While the tone of the issue itself had me almost instantly hooked the story inside the pages also was extremely enjoyable. I found that the foreshadowing was bit limited due to having to combine the two teams in one issue. This is the biggest flaw with the issue as it left me sort of guessing on the future of the series; however, my take is that the story will be taking both the Legion of Superheroes and the original Enterprise crew and pairing them together in the “mirror” Star Trek universe. I’ve always been a fan of cross over universes so the idea of all three of these combining just couldn’t get any better for me.

Overall, while I have been enjoying the “new crew in action” with Star Trek Ongoing, Issue 1 of Star Trek Legion of Superheroes edges out the series making it my new favourite Star Trek read – it’s too bad I’m getting on the boat just weeks after it wrapped up.
