I think the new facebook/digital culture is impersonal and somewhat lazy in its remembrances of others. It is nice to contact people who you haven’t seen in awhile, but you must see the messages shared on it being like passing polite interests – sort of like asking someone in a quick fashion, “How’s it going?” It is more of a “Hello” than it is meant to be actual interest in the person’s life.

I think it is the preferred choice of people generally because it distances you from the subject, especially if it is some kind of memorial. The impact of standing in a mausoleum or at a grave is much more intense than a notice on email. And if you think the impact can be the same, than it is determined mostly by the closeness of the person leaving the message to the subject. But I for one think it is a cop out to the real experience.

To repeat the words of Benjamin Franklin: being ignoranjt isn’t so much
a shame, as being unwilling to learn. I would like to take this opportunity and
thank you for helping me learn, so that I am a tad less ignorant now than I had been yesterday.
