Wow, this did not show up on my iTunes until recently. So I’m seriously late :p

Anyway, good podcast. And very interesting choice of subjects. Hope to hear about some more documentaries.

About the discussion between liberal and conservative, the problem is that people try to use these terms as blanket statements to associate with a particular party. But most definitions for liberal means increased government involvement, and conservative means keeping government out. I’ve also seen them defined oppositely based on level of government restricions/freedoms, rather than size and involvement. (The second is the definition I prefer, actually.)

Under the first set of definitions (which I’ve found most people use), then Republicans are actually fiscally conservative and socially liberal, while Democrats are socially conservative and fiscally liberal.

Jason, that’s probably why you don’t feel like you fit under either. You actually fit under both. Which just means you’re a moderate. And if someone is both fiscally and socially conservative, then they lean towards being a libertarian. (Being a conservative in both making one a libertarian rubs me the wrong way, which is why I prefer the other definition, which reverses the definition of Republican and Democrat, and means being liberal makes one a libertarian.)
