Publisher’s Blurb:
Tears of the Dragon tells the story of a well-traveled Old Man and his two young grandchildren, who are taking a long journey to the homeland of the old man’s beloved and children’s grandmother, the Kingdom of Vapolany. To pass the time, the children request a story. Young Callum wants to hear one of the old man’s legendary war stories, while little Cayla would prefer a love story. They’ll both get their wish, as the old man spins a grand tale of swords and sorcery, dragons and demons, revenge, regret and redemption, and above all…love.

Reviewer’s Comments:
When I was first approached to review Tears of the Dragon I wasn’t sure whether or not to say yes. For me I find that fantasy books often are either very cheesy or very boring. Regardless, I decided to say yes and what a smart move that was – this book is nothing like many previous fantasy books that I’ve read.

Before I get into reviewing the writing/story of Tears of the Dragon, I just want to say right away that even if you don’t like fantasy stories, you should check out the art as I would describe it as incredible. It’s crisp, it’s clean, it’s vibrant and it has a nice warm tone to it. There are a lot of artists that should take notes from this book as it really is a perfect example of what I like to see it comic book art.

Just like the art, other fantasy writers should take note of how Tears of the Dragon was written. Where I feel most fantasy writers often fail is in the exaggeration of old-english use. I understand that writers feel that it adds effect; however, I’ve always found it extremely distraction. The writing in this book, however, uses the perfect balance of both – just enough to keep your mindset in the times, but also little enough so that it’s an easy read. Tears of the Dragon also does an excellent job of intertwining two separate stories throughout the comic – which is not an easy task to do. I will fully admit that when I first realized that there were going to be two separate stories I felt like they should pick one and stick with it; however, by the end of the read I was eagerly waiting for the conclusion to both.

Overall I think this is an excellently written story and I can’t wait to see more of it – great writing, beautiful art and just a fun read.

avatarAbout the Writer: StephenJondrew  (1161 Posts)

Stephen Jondrew lives in an igloo in Canada.... Luckily, it's a west coast igloo which means for most of the year he spends his days in either the sun or rain -- its always one of the two. In the grand scheme of things Stephen is a relatively new comic book reader, first getting into indie comics when Project Fanboy was founded, and then getting back into mainstream comics over the last year or so. When you don't find him posting news or reviews on Project Fanboy he's usually found doing something with the Fanboy Buzz comic book podcast.
